Possible future 2 of 6 · W02
AI wealth is shared
AI can do much of today's office work cheaply, and the wealth it creates is shared widely enough for people and public services to benefit.

This is a scenario, not a prediction or probability. It is a deliberately testable possible condition used to see how product demand changes.
How this future develops
Now
Where we are
Most people still rely on wages, while companies and governments debate who should benefit from AI-created wealth.
World shift
What would change
AI becomes able to do much of today's digital office work at very low cost. New ownership, tax or benefit systems share some of the gains.
2031
What life could feel like
People depend less on a conventional office job for income. Care, learning, making things and community work become a bigger part of everyday life.
Why the apps would change
People need new ways to receive shared income, prove contributions, find purpose and organise services outside a normal job.
The condition the research tested
If independently verified general cross-domain cognition makes matched digital cognitive labour close to zero cost across much of the economy, autonomous task-hours diffuse and paid cognitive work breaks sharply. If broad ownership claims, adequate non-payroll income and funded public and civic institutions arrive in time, household buying power and total demand remain viable. Contribution, status, belonging and time structure shift toward care, learning, stewardship, making and democratic service, while physical delivery stays scarce, governed and regionally unequal.
Causal chain
- Independent general cross-domain and diffusion gates cross.
- Matched digital cognitive labour cost approaches zero across much of the economy.
- Autonomous task-hours spread and paid cognitive work breaks sharply.
- Wages and payroll tax fall while machine and infrastructure returns rise.
- Broad ownership claims and adequate transfers preserve household buying power.
- Viable demand supports investment in scarce energy, housing, care, education, health and climate capacity.
- Contribution, status and time structure shift toward care, learning, making, stewardship and democratic service.
- Belonging remains contingent on reciprocal human institutions; relational AI can bridge or harm.
- Physical limits, responsibility, rights and regional capacity prevent equal outcomes.
What we had to assume
- The full capability and diffusion conjunction occurs in digital cognition before general robotics.
- Legislatures or collective institutions establish broad claims on machine-capital returns quickly enough to prevent demand collapse.
- Transfers remain adequate, portable, correctable and accessible without coercive identity linkage.
- Real community, care, education and climate capacity is funded rather than replaced by synthetic contact.
What nobody knows yet
- How cross-border ownership claims are valued and enforced.
- Whether income support preserves agency and political legitimacy.
- Whether less paid work expands care and civic contribution or fragments time.
- Whether cheap tutoring improves durable learning.
- Whether digital abundance accelerates biological and cyber threats faster than audit.
Evidence used to frame this world
observation · W02-E01
Reliable task horizons are short at the cutoff and physical autonomy is much weaker than digital benchmark progress.
Source records: src-international-ai-safety-report-2026, src-metr-long-tasks-2025, PC-S11, PC-S12
Important limit: This is the starting point, not evidence that the world condition arrives.
scenario-condition · W02-E02
By 2030 independent tests jointly cross general cross-domain capability, low-rescue completion, matched-cost and broad autonomous-diffusion gates.
Source records: src-oecd-ai-trajectories-2026, src-metr-long-tasks-2025
Important limit: The conjunction is a stress-test condition and has no frequency assignment.
inference · W02-E03
The work break lowers wages and payroll tax; broad ownership claims and adequate transfers replace buying power, sustain total demand and fund physically scarce investment.
Source records: src-imf-ai-future-work-2024, EWF-14, EWF-15, EWF-20, EWF-22
Important limit: No economy-wide causal estimate validates this full transmission.
projection · W02-E04
Compute growth still meets grid, water, chip, land and permission limits.
Source records: PC-S01, PC-S02, PC-S03, PC-S04, E05, W03
Important limit: Ranges and announced capacity do not determine local allocation.
policy-intent · W02-E05
Public compute, digital infrastructure, social protection and connection policy supply pieces of a wider settlement.
Source records: AC-30, AC-33, AC-36, horizon.geopolitics-governance-security.s13, SC-AI04
Important limit: Rules and programmes do not prove adequate income, rights or belonging.
observation · W02-E06
Health, education and climate outcomes still require staff, facilities, pedagogy, adaptation and fair access.
Source records: src-who-multimodal-health-guidance-2024, src-unesco-genai-education-2023, HBD-05, C03, C04
Important limit: Guidance and assessed need are not delivered outcomes.
unknown · W02-E07
No evidence identifies one institution that reliably creates contribution, status, routine and belonging outside paid work.
Source records: SC-G01, SC-G07, src-who-social-connection-2025, src-oecd-social-connections-2025
Important limit: Attendance, contact and service use are not reciprocal friendship or belonging.
